Christmas Eve (for a friend)

December 24, 2010

The tree was strung with stars.
The packages burst below
Relatives and friends alike
Gathered from the snow

We sat round with full plates
And bowed our heads in prayer
Remembering those that have passed
The special ones not there

And in that silent moment
You glimpse off toward the tree
And see a halo round the highest star
And know they've come to see

You smile to yourself
As Christmas dinner starts
And though they're gone you realize
The halo's in your heart
